Wekiva Officially Designated "Wild and Scenic River"

LONGWOOD, Fla. -- Central Florida's Wekiva River has been nationally recognized as a wild and scenic river, and it will be protected because of the designation.

The water is crystal clear, and the river is teaming with birds, fish and natural vegetation that filter the spring water as it flows toward the St. Johns River.

"This is an accomplishment that's at least 30 years in the making," Audubon Society representative Charles Lee said.

First named a national wild and scenic river 12 years ago, the management plan that comes with the protection is now in place.
