Lake Monroe’s post-Ian rise heightens flooding concerns in Sanford

The city of Sanford has suggested that residents and businesses on Marina Isle evacuate because water levels on Lake Monroe — which is part of the St. Johns River — are expected to continue rising through Thursday.

Meanwhile, the swelling lake by Tuesday had engulfed the Sanford Riverwalk, covering West Seminole Boulevard with rising waters a stone’s throw from downtown businesses.

The same stretch of the riverside was passable on foot Friday after Ian departed, the sidewalk dry and roadway pooled but not flooded. But officials have warned that areas along the St. Johns River would continue to see flooding as storm water flows northward from Orange County.

Fire Chief Ronnie McNeil said about 37 residents from the Marina Isle Waterfront Assisted Living facility were evacuated on Tuesday after orders from the state’s Agency for Health Care Administration.
